Friday Quotes: All the Light We Cannot See

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City ReaderShare the opening quote from the book.
The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's VoiceFind a quote from page 56.

Check out the links for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Participants don't select their favorite, coolest, or most intellectual books, they just use the one they are currently reading. This is the book I'm reading right now:

Book: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Book Beginnings:
Leaflets: At dusk they pour from the sky. They blow across the ramparts, turn cartwheels over rooftops, flutter into ravines between houses. Entire streets swirl with them, flashing white against the cobbles. Urgent message to the inhabitants of this town, they say. Depart immediately to open country.
Friday 56:
Not so long ago the Hotel of Bees was a cheerful address, with bright blue shutters on its facade and oysters on ice in its cafe and Breton waiters in bow ties polishing glasses behind the bar.
Comments: It seems like I am the last person alive to read this book, and I only just started it. Some have liked it, others not. If you have read it, please comment about why you liked it/did not like it. If you haven't read it, please let me know in the comment section what you think of the two quotes. I confess to already be in love with the language.

  2. I haven't read it either, Anne...LOL. I am curious now, however. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. I read this one with one of my book clubs and the members rated it between 3 and 5 (on a scale of 5). I liked it, but wished some of the characters had been more developed. I also wished that one relationship in particular had been more developed (I won't say which so as not to spoil it for you).

    1. The gals in my book club who read it didn't like the book so we did not select it for a group read. Yet, it is hard to ignore a National Book Award finalist on the best seller list.

  5. Not only have I not read this one, but I've never heard of it. I hope you are one of the ones who enjoy it. This week I am spotlighting Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Mary Wingate - a cozy mystery. Happy reading!

  6. I loved this book, one of the few I went out to buy rather than borrow from the library. I could sympathize with the blind girl and read with interest how she went about her days, how she adjusted to being bling but still able to get around and even to solve a mystery and survive the war. Her interaction with the young soldier and his ordeals during war were also riveting. I hope you enjoy it.

  7. Literary, meandering, character driven -- some of the adjectives I used to describe this book. I enjoyed it -- the audio version was excellent. Historical fiction is my fav, though. I have 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea sitting right next to me waiting to be read since I this book. Enjoy!

    1. I trust your judgment and hope I find it as literary, meandering and character driven as you did.

  8. I finished this a couple of weeks ago. Though well written, I didn't fall in love with it like I had expected to especially with all the awards it received. I'm planning on writing a review next week.

    1. I have a feeling this is what my friends thought of it, too. There is so much hype about this book and then it meanders around. I will look for your review. I am doing this book on audiobooks so it will take me a while to digest it.

  9. I haven't read this one and am on the fence about it. I know lots of people have really loved this one but I think it's a bit darker than what I'm looking for right now. Hope you enjoy it!

  11. I've heard a lot about this book, but I haven't read it and don't know much about it. I like the writing in the opening -- great description of the leaflets falling from the sky -- and the 56 excerpt makes me wonder how the Hotel of Bees has changed. What a great name for a hotel! I hope you enjoy the book.

My Friday post features The Reluctant Midwife.

    1. I thought I was the only person who hadn't read it. Yes, the descriptive writing is very beautiful. I can just picture the leaflets flying around the street.

  12. I have never heard of this book before, so then I have not read it. I will wait for your review and see how it fared with you. Then I will see if it should be on my TBR. It sounds like the author is very descriptive with their writing and I like that type of book. I like a book that just immerses you into the setting. I love just losing myself in a book.

  15. Is it legitimate to avoid books associated with stressful mother-in-laws? Because that's my excuse with this one!

    1. Oh-oh. I haven't gotten anywhere near to mother-in-laws in this book yet.

  16. Wow, sounds like quite a vivid book! Really nice description too. I hope you enjoyed it :) I have to admit, I've not heard of it before.
