Top ten books it seems everyone has read but me!
1. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens..."it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" but I don't know which since I have never read this classic.
2. Divergent by Veronica Roth...I sure seems like everyone on the blogosphere has read this book. Everyone but me, that is.
3. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck... our schools seem to only require the short Steinbecks: Of mice and Men; The Pearl; or Cannery Row. I have a ton of interest in the subject covered in this book but I still haven't read it.
4. On the Road by Jack Kerouac... actually I know very few people who have told me that they've read this book but it seems like one I should have read by now.
5. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut... I actually hope to get to this one this month for Banned Books Week.
6. Bone (Graphic Novel) by Jeff Smith...I have the whole series in my library. There is no excuse.
7. Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume... I was a little old for this book when it was written but I let my daughters read it without so much as a preview.
8. Dune by Frank Herbert... in fact, I haven't read any of the early and great Sci-Fi "standards."
9. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery... gulp! Can you believe my name is Anne and I haven't read this one?
10. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse... apparently a lot of folks my age had to read this book in school. Not me. And I still haven't a clue.
( I should brag a little here, though. I recently knocked off two books that would have been on this list: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Both are very good. Add them to your list if you haven't read them, yet.

ReplyDeleteI was suppose to read A Tale of Two Cities back(way back) in high school and never did. To this day I still cannot read Dickens. I just cannot get past his verbosity!
ReplyDeleteI've read 1,2 and 9, but on other books from your list. You should read Divergent, it's trully a great novel.

ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to read ON THE ROAD as well. I haven't read many on your list, save SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, which is quite good.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually going to read Hitchhiker's Guide for one of my book clubs, and I've never read it before! Bone is an awesome and fairly fast-paced series, I think you'll like it. :) Have a nice day!

There are a few on here I haven't read either, such as Siddhartha, Dune or Bone. You must read Anne of Green Gables- it's one of my favorites! Great list!

I've only read one Anne of Green Gables book so don't feel too bad.

ReplyDeleteIve got Tale of 2 Cities & Grapes of Wrath checked, but only because required in HS. I read Slaughterhouse 5 looking for a WWII book for my students. Otherwise I am in the same boat. Lots of good classics I need to read too.

ReplyDeleteAs usual, you inspired me! I didn't think I had time for lists today, but I liked yours so much that I joined in the fun!
We read Tale of Two Cities and Grapes of Wrath in high school (lots of Dickens and Steinbeck at my school). I read On the Road a couple of summers ago.
The Bone series is great...and very quick reads! Lots of fun.
I can't wait to read Divergent! My son loved it.
Slaughterhouse Five, Dune, and Anne of Green Gables were all on my lists, too.

I've only read Dune (the first one only) from your list. I love Dune. It was my first ever favorite book. So good. Most of the other books are on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI would highly recommend Grapes of Wrath, or East of Eden if you haven't read any long Steinbeck. I think he's best in the long form.

Divergent is the only book on this list that I have read. And my thoughts on that read is kind of "no comment." Ha. Oh wait then I saw Anne of Green Gables. Oh that is such a awesome series. I read it when I was much younger though.
ReplyDeleteOy, The Grapes of Wrath. I actually did have to read it in high school, and hated it. I know I should go back and give it another chance, but my dislike is so firmly entrenched that I can't bring myself to make the attempt. :p

Dune was a required read for a sci-fi lit class I had in high school with the coolest teacher ever! And every book he had us read became enduring favorites!!
