Friday memes, August 15

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Participants don't select their favorite, coolest or most intellectual books, they just use the one they are currently reading. I'm reading:

Book: Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn

Book Beginnings:
My phone is ringing.
It's 3:29.
In the morning.
Friday 56:
"If it were up to me, he wouldn't have anything to do with her. But my brother doesn't think rationally when it come to your sister. He never has. Guess Danny's not so smart for a college guy, is he?"
My thoughts: I love these Friday memes. They force me forward in my reading. I haven't started this book, yet now I have cracked it open and I am ready to begin reading it.

  1. Definitely! That happens for me, too; when showcasing a book, it grabs me with its appeal. Thanks for sharing, Anne, and also for visiting my blog.

  3. Nice beginning and excerpt. Hope you enjoy this one. I totally agree about how memes can motivate one's reading. I'm always thinking ahead to what I'll post for the Tuesday and Friday memes I participate in.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. Uh-oh. Three A.M. phone calls are rarely good news! That's a great way to start a story.

    1. I got a late night phone call once and it was a wrong number. Talk about a heart attack for no reason.

  6. I love how the beginning is set up. There's a big difference between the phone ringing at 3:29 PM and 3:29 AM!

  7. Hi Anne,

They say that the only phone calls you get in the night herald bad news, so I am guessing that's what is about to happen here?

Sometimes I will feature books a little ahead of me actually reading them, so if the first lines of a book then grab my attention, it is a wrench to close the covers again and return to the book I am already reading!

This story sounds quite intense for a YA read and is definitely one I would pick up for myself.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend,

    Yvonne

  9. It best be an emergency to call me at that hour. I'd be livid otherwise.
The 56 sounds like something that is natural.
    Happy weekend!

  10. I've read many books because I cracked them open for my 56 post.
Any phone call at that hour would have my heart jumping. And ouch, that guy doesn't like his sister much. Love the title and cover art!

  11. Brothers don't think rationally about sisters. Of course, I've never had a brother. My sons have never had a sister. I just feel it would be this way.

  12. Oh, the speaker sounds so annoyed in the opener but then I would be too. I hope you enjoy the book!

  13. That cover is fantastic!!

A phone ringing at that time of the night would be pretty scary.

I love these memes too. I love finding new books that I really don't need but must have. :)

    Happy Weekend.
