Book: Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn
Book Beginnings:
My phone is ringing.Friday 56:
It's 3:29.
In the morning.
"If it were up to me, he wouldn't have anything to do with her. But my brother doesn't think rationally when it come to your sister. He never has. Guess Danny's not so smart for a college guy, is he?"My thoughts: I love these Friday memes. They force me forward in my reading. I haven't started this book, yet now I have cracked it open and I am ready to begin reading it.
Definitely! That happens for me, too; when showcasing a book, it grabs me with its appeal. Thanks for sharing, Anne, and also for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteThe first sentences are really intriguing!

Nice beginning and excerpt. Hope you enjoy this one. I totally agree about how memes can motivate one's reading. I'm always thinking ahead to what I'll post for the Tuesday and Friday memes I participate in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog.
Uh-oh. Three A.M. phone calls are rarely good news! That's a great way to start a story.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to my Friday post: MADE FOR TWO.
I got a late night phone call once and it was a wrong number. Talk about a heart attack for no reason.
DeleteI agree that the Friday memes keep me on my toes too; it's fun! These teasers give a dark, eerie mood; you've got me curious :)

I love how the beginning is set up. There's a big difference between the phone ringing at 3:29 PM and 3:29 AM!
ReplyDeleteHi Anne,
ReplyDeleteThey say that the only phone calls you get in the night herald bad news, so I am guessing that's what is about to happen here?
Sometimes I will feature books a little ahead of me actually reading them, so if the first lines of a book then grab my attention, it is a wrench to close the covers again and return to the book I am already reading!
This story sounds quite intense for a YA read and is definitely one I would pick up for myself.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend,
Yvonne
I am doing the same this week. Just purchased the book and have not started reading.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to start the book today. Let's race! Ha!
DeleteIt best be an emergency to call me at that hour. I'd be livid otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThe 56 sounds like something that is natural.
Happy weekend!
I've read many books because I cracked them open for my 56 post.
ReplyDeleteAny phone call at that hour would have my heart jumping. And ouch, that guy doesn't like his sister much. Love the title and cover art!
Here is my 56 - http://fuonlyknew.com/2014/08/15/the-friday-56-32-waking-the-merrow-by-heather-rigney-not-so-nice-mermaids/
Brothers don't think rationally about sisters. Of course, I've never had a brother. My sons have never had a sister. I just feel it would be this way.
ReplyDeleteOh, the speaker sounds so annoyed in the opener but then I would be too. I hope you enjoy the book!
ReplyDeleteThat cover is fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteA phone ringing at that time of the night would be pretty scary.
I love these memes too. I love finding new books that I really don't need but must have. :)
Happy Weekend.
Elizabeth
