Sunday Salon...HOT!

Weather report: HOT! See video for a reminder of just how hot...

Yesterday: Our niece and her husband, our daughter and her family, my sister, and Don and I had a BBQ. Bad timing. The temperature, hovering at around 100 degrees with a high humidity, chased us indoors. I joked, as we sat down to a dinner of hamburgers, corn, and watermelon, it was the first time we've ever eaten a picnic at our dining room table. Loved the company though.

Our lovely niece and darling grandson meet for the first time.

Day before yesterday: My sister, daughter and her kids, and I showed up at the local spray park. (Us and everyone else in town who has little kids.) Ian ran through the sprinklers with both joy and trepidation. Jamie sat in rapt attention watching all the commotion. When we got home we held a hot tub party. This photo is about as priceless as it comes.

Book-related stuff: I finished one book this week -- The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Click on the hyperlink for my review. // I'm reading one e-book -- Breathing Lessons by Ann Tyler. It is a past Pulitzer Prize winner and I'm wondering why. // I'm listening to one book -- We Are Not Free by Traci Chee. It is about Japanese Internment during WWII told from the point-of-view from several teenagers. It is a fresh take on a tough subject. // Book club this week we discussed The Exiles by Christina Beker Cline. It is about the penal system in England in the 1850s where prisoners were sent to Australia, a penal colony. Another tough topic. // Good advice. Please don't dog-ear your pages...

Want to think about something besides how hot it is? Try this video (1 minute long) of a table tennis match from 1979. Don't worry if you don't know Dutch. You'll understand what is happening.

Having trouble finding a word to describe the heat?

Can't think of anything else. Stay cool, if you can.

  1. WE are pretty lucky here in Michigan. Not sweltering, scorching, smothering, scalding, steaming, sizzling, or stewing in our own juices. Just mildly hot.

  2. For once, we are reading several of the same books. Loved The Gour Winds, and I Agree with your assessment of Breathing Essenes. I always read books about Japanese internment with a personal interest, but also with the realization that my half Caucasian mom dealt with some pretty harsh treatment from the Japanese during WWII. It makes me sad that we spend so much of our energy on hate and division.

Can you tell I didn’t increase the font before I published? Sorry for the blind, non edited response. I have new glasses coming soon. 🙄

  4. It's hot here in St. Louis, but the worst part is thunderstorms in the forecast all week long.

  5. We've been having high temps, humidty, & rain. It's my least favorite time of year.

Love the hot tub photo :)

I didn't get any reading done last week because I was on vacation. I took a book and one of my Kindles, but we were non stop going all week. That picture of the dogs is hilarious!

Love the table tennis video, I used to love to play when I was younger.

I live in Florida and our weather is all of those words.

I hope you have a great week!

  8. I saw that the temps were very high up in your part of the world. We are supposed to get some rain this week and that will pull us down into the 80s. We always have a nice breeze here, and that helps us tolerate the heat and humidity.

Love the hot tub party. Little kids are fabulous.

I had to send the bookmark comic to my book club. My sort of humor.

  11. Suffocating here in Arkansas. I don't know how these cats stand laying outside in it but when I open the door and ask "Don't you want to come inside with the air conditioning?" I just get glared at for disturbing the nap. Sorry, wanted to make sure you were still alive, kitty.

I read the Exiles and thought it was pretty good.
