Top Ten Tuesday: Characters You Can't Connect With...Jane Austen version
TTT is hosted at The Broke and Bookish
Today (Monday) is the last day of Austen in August over at RoofBeamReader, so I decided to select all my characters from the works of Jane Austen.
1. General Tilney
Northanger Abbey
Obsessive, mean, and selfish
2. Mrs. Norris
Mansfield Park
Jealous, controlling, thoughtless
3. Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Pride and Prejudice
Snotty and classist
4. Fanny Dashwood
Sense and Sensibility
Selfish and thoughtless
5. Mr Collins
Pride and Prejudice
Annoying, tedious, sniveling
6. Mr. and Mrs. Elton
Emma
He is unforgiving; she is bossy and a loud-talker
7. Mr. Elliot
Persuasion
Self-Centered, Conceited, and neglectful toward daughter Anne
8. Lady Susan
Lady Susan
Scheming and unscrupulous
9. Isabella and John Thorpe
Northanger Abbey
Conniving golddiggers
10. Caroline Bingley
Pride and Prejudice
Conceited and insincere
What a great twist on today's topic! I haven't yet read all of Jane Austen's novels and so haven't met all the characters you mention. I do agree with several of your choices though.Caroline Bingley, Mr. and Mrs. Elton, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Elliot.
ReplyDeleteAusten has created some really annoying characters.Every book has at least one.
DeleteWell done, nicely! I too had a Jane Austen character show up on my list and I fear for my blogger existence because he's quite popular. This list was hard and I had to really search around for characters it seemed, because I overlook faulty characters quickly in favor of ones that I really like anyway. My TTT is a mishmash for sure.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did notice Captain Wentworth on your list. I don't think Austen let's us know him very well.
DeleteGreat list! I love how specific it is to Jane Austen. I've only read Pride and Prejudice and ugh I couldn't stand Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mr Collins!!! They were so pretentious and annoying.
ReplyDeleteI remember not thinkig much of Mr Collins either! Thank you for stopping by my blog earlier.
ReplyDeleteI actually quite like the Thorpes, haha. They're terrible people but fun to read about - same with Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine. But Mr. Elliot is definitely vile!
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly without the Thorpes Northanger Abbey wouldn't be half the story it is.
DeleteOoh, such a cool way to do the prompt! I *coughs* shamefully haven't read any jane Austen, although I did watch the Emma movie!! I don't remember connecting very well to Emma and all her matchmaking though. >_< Here's my TTT!
ReplyDeleteI love your book photos. I look forward to them every week.
DeleteLoving the Austen-related list - Austen in August has been so much fun this year! Mine is more general - these are the characters that gave me the creeps (only one Austen amongst them). Hope you have an amazing week!
ReplyDelete3 and 5, yes to the yes. I just hated both of them so much and spent much of the time wishing they would just shut up or someone would come in and kill them off and then continue on with the book like it never happened. Great list :)

This is a great twist on the topic! I love Jane Austen, but there are definitely a lot of unlikable characters within her books! Here is my TTT
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea and I love all your choices!

Austen is a master at writing annoying and "evil" characters! Mr. Collins is literature's biggest doofus in my mind!
ReplyDeleteGreat topic!
Thanks for stopping by the The Local Muse
Yes, yes, yes to everyone on this list! I don't know which one I'd say I disliked the most, so many! Great twist on the topic.
ReplyDeleteI love that all the characters are from Jane Austen novels, it was such a good idea for this topic. I totally agree with you about the characters on the list that are from Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, which are the books I have read by her.
ReplyDeleteLove this list! Completely agree! I've got an Austen character on My TTT list this week too :)
ReplyDeleteI've only read Pride & Prejudice so far, and I don't remember it very well. I need to read more Jane Austen!
ReplyDeleteI love to watch the movies in addition to reading the books. I tell my students to do that, too, so they will know where the story is going.
DeleteI love it that you have enough Austen characters
ReplyDeleteOops...enough Austen characters to make a
ReplyDeleteOh my...apologies...a whole list!
ReplyDeleteNice list
ReplyDeleteThis is a very unique and fun list! I haven't actually read any Jane Austen books (I know, I know!) but I love the list!!
ReplyDeleteShannon @ It Starts At Midnight
Really awesome idea for a list. I haven't read many Jane Austen but I definitely agree with your choice of Mr Collins, Lady Catherine and Mrs. Norris. Ugh, such horrible characters.
ReplyDeleteNice twist for this week topic! I haven't read many Jane Austen books but I agree with Caroline from Pride and Prejudice.
