TTT: Jane Austen Characters I Just Couldn't Connect With...or Like

Top Ten Tuesday: Characters You Can't Connect With...Jane Austen version
TTT is hosted at The Broke and Bookish

Today (Monday) is the last day of Austen in August over at RoofBeamReader, so I decided to select all my characters from the works of Jane Austen.

1. General Tilney
Northanger Abbey
Obsessive, mean, and selfish

2. Mrs. Norris
Mansfield Park
Jealous, controlling, thoughtless

3. Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Pride and Prejudice
Snotty and classist

4. Fanny Dashwood
Sense and Sensibility
Selfish and thoughtless

5. Mr Collins
Pride and Prejudice
Annoying, tedious, sniveling

6. Mr. and Mrs. Elton
Emma
He is unforgiving; she is bossy and a loud-talker

7. Mr. Elliot
Persuasion
Self-Centered, Conceited, and neglectful toward daughter Anne

8. Lady Susan
Lady Susan
Scheming and unscrupulous

9. Isabella and John Thorpe
Northanger Abbey
Conniving golddiggers

10. Caroline Bingley
Pride and Prejudice
Conceited and insincere

  1. What a great twist on today's topic! I haven't yet read all of Jane Austen's novels and so haven't met all the characters you mention. I do agree with several of your choices though.Caroline Bingley, Mr. and Mrs. Elton, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Elliot.

  2. Well done, nicely! I too had a Jane Austen character show up on my list and I fear for my blogger existence because he's quite popular. This list was hard and I had to really search around for characters it seemed, because I overlook faulty characters quickly in favor of ones that I really like anyway. My TTT is a mishmash for sure.

    1. Yes, I did notice Captain Wentworth on your list. I don't think Austen let's us know him very well.

  3. Great list! I love how specific it is to Jane Austen. I've only read Pride and Prejudice and ugh I couldn't stand Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mr Collins!!! They were so pretentious and annoying.

  5. I actually quite like the Thorpes, haha. They're terrible people but fun to read about - same with Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine. But Mr. Elliot is definitely vile!

    1. Admittedly without the Thorpes Northanger Abbey wouldn't be half the story it is.

  7. Loving the Austen-related list - Austen in August has been so much fun this year! Mine is more general - these are the characters that gave me the creeps (only one Austen amongst them). Hope you have an amazing week!

  8. 3 and 5, yes to the yes. I just hated both of them so much and spent much of the time wishing they would just shut up or someone would come in and kill them off and then continue on with the book like it never happened. Great list :)

  13. I love that all the characters are from Jane Austen novels, it was such a good idea for this topic. I totally agree with you about the characters on the list that are from Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, which are the books I have read by her.

    1. I love to watch the movies in addition to reading the books. I tell my students to do that, too, so they will know where the story is going.
