Book: The Golem and the Jinni: a novel by Helene Wecker
Book Beginnings:
The Golem's life began on the hold of a steamship. The year was 1899; the ship the Baltika, crossing from Danzig to New York. The Golem's master, a man named Otto Rotfeld, had smuggled her aboard in a crate and hidden her among the luggage.Friday 56: (Actually page 52 this week. See explanation below.)
She read the book three times through, trying to understand these long ago people. Their motives, needs, and fears were always on the surface, as easy for her to grasp as those of a man passing by.My Comments: A golem is a person made out of clay. I started listening to this audiobook in June, set it aside while we traveled, and then just picked it back up this week after a five week hiatus. In order to find the quotes, I had to look in the Google book. The only provided pages went up to page 52, that is why my quote is from that page rather than 56. To be honest I'm a bit freaked out by the length of the audiobook. It has 22 discs. An average book has 11-14. Eek. I will be listening to this book for months!
This book is on my "maybe I'll give it a try" list. I like the cover--the arch in Washington Square Park, NYC, my old stomping grounds.

Sounds interesting. Might have to try it. I've only read one book about a golem, and it was a horror novel.
ReplyDeleteHere is my 56 - http://fuonlyknew.com/2014/07/25/the-friday-56-29-not-juliet-by-ella-medler/
I don't think this book is a horror story, though I am barely one quarter in to the story. Interestingly it has a Jewish faith connection.
DeleteNow that I've read the Book Beginning and the Friday 56, I would like to read this one. I've looked at it. Couldn't make up my mind. I especially like the Friday 56.
ReplyDeleteSo intriguing....thanks for sharing! And here's mine: “EVERYWHERE THAT MARY WENT”
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a female Golem! I think I might have to check this one out, because I'm really curious where the Jinni comes in! Thanks for sharing :) Hope you have a great weekend!

I like the beginning but that length is definitely intimidating! I'm new to audio books but I'd be a little worried I'd forget what happened on CD 1 by the time I got to CD 22!
ReplyDeleteI am completely freaked out about the length for sure. Sometimes I find that audiobooks go too slowly for me then I rush to the library and checkout the print edition of the book so I read it faster.
DeleteOh my - smuggled aboard inside a crate. Wonder if she will be in there for the entire trip. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteLove the cover. It sounds good.
ENJOY, and have a great weekend.
THANKS for sharing.

My Book Beginnings
I don't know much about golems, so I'm curious. However, it's difficult to commit to reading (or listening to) a book that long! I'll add it to my "maybe" list for the future because it's definitely intriguing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for leaving a comment on my blog post: REMIX.
Oooh, a female golem! I don't think I've ever seen a story about a golem that wasn't male.
ReplyDeleteI've been away from the meme for a while, but trying to get back in the swing of things. Here's my Friday Post.
Sounds like it's worth it though. I remember I wish listed this ages ago.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
