Friday memes...September 5th

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader
The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice

Check out the links for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Participants don't select their favorite, coolest or most intellectual books, they just use the one they are currently reading.

I'm reading---

Book: Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Book Beginnings:
Marina once told me that we only remember what never really happened. It would take me  a lifetime to understand what those words meant.
 Friday 56:
I slid through the gate. Bright flashes of lightning guided me to the house, where I was greeted by the grinning mermaid in the fountain. Trembling with cold, I reached the kitchen door at the back of the old mansion. It was open. I went in.
My thoughts:
I love the opening comment. I tend to agree that we really only remember what has never happened anywhere except in our own heads.

This book is considered a gothic tale. The library put a HORROR sticker on it. I've read another book in the same genre by this author and found it quite frightening. We'll see if this one, recently translated from Spanish, will be similarly hair-raising.

  1. I've never heard of this book, but it seems interesting. That label of "Gothic tale" kind of catches my eye, so I might have to find it and read it one of these days.

I just followed you on GFC, by the way. Thanks again for checking out my blog. :)

  2. I love Carlos Ruiz Zafon, his writing style is amazing and I really enjoyed 'Marina', although 'The Angel's Game' is still my favourite. This cover is gorgeous as well, it's really Gothic! I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. Sometimes I discover my memory of an event is all wrong. I wonder if that's what it means.
I've not heard of this author before but I do like the writing style and I'm curious what happens once they enter the house. Nice cover art. It makes you wonder too.

  4. That beginning is very intriguing...and sometimes, I think we remember things selectively....and later, have to ponder what really happened. Makes me think....and sort of reminds me of my dreams last night, which seemed like events that had happened, but hadn't.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
