Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City ReaderShare the opening quote from the book.
Th
e Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's VoiceFind a quote from page 56.

This is the book I'm reading right now---

Title: Life Inside My Mind: 31 Authors Share Their Personal Struggles edited by Jessica Burkhart

Book Beginning: from "Stupid Monsters and Child Surgeons" by Maureen Johnson---
"I have had anxiety. I suffered a serious bout of it a few years ago. It hit me like a bolt out of the blue and stuck with me a while."
Friday 56: from "I Am Not This" by Rachel M. Wilson
"A family portrait: I'm visiting the fam over the summer and it's eleven p.m. on the night before a weeklong beach vacation. Dad's instructed everyone to be ready to go bright and early."
Comment: The book is made up of 31 essays by YA authors who share their own, or a story about a loved-one, stories about mental illness. The first essay (Book Beginning) is by Maureen Johnson and she talks about her bouts with anxiety. The Friday 56 essay is by Rachel Wilson. Her story involves her whole family, they are impacted by OCD. Other topics: bi-polar syndrome, suicidal ideation, mental illness stigmas, bulimia, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Click the link here if you want to read my review of this book. Thanks.

  5. I read your review, which was very insightful. Sorry to hear about the loss of your students.

I also thought of others who might benefit from reading at least some of the essays. I can understand how reading them all might be overwhelming.

    1. I didn't actually feel overwhelmed reading them, I felt a little over-the-top. Like about ten of them weren't necessary to make the point. But who knows? Each one was different so it likely speaks to one person's needs.

  7. Sounds interesting. I always like to learn more about the authors I read. This week I'm spotlighting The Plot is Murder by V. M. Burns - a mystery within a mystery from my TBR mountain. Happy reading!

  8. A very worthy book for any school, or even household book shelf, especially give the huge amount of recent focus there seems to be around childhood and teenage mental health issues - at least, here in the UK.

My only thought is that perhaps so many examples were not necessary, as such a vast number might well overwhelm a YA reader and send them into an even deeper depression?

    Thanks for sharing :)

  11. This sounds like something I would be able to relate too---and maybe others I know. I don't often read collections of essays, but even from the opening you shared, I can relate. I will have to add this one to my wish list.

    1. I am finding more interest in short stories and essays as I age. I wonder if I have a shorter attention span than a novel requires.
