Sunday Salon (on Monday) --- Family Edition

Me and my siblings. It may have been hot in the Willamette Valley but it was cool at the coast. Photos taken by our sister-in-law, B. Kingsbury

Weather: It has been hot the past few days. I keep singing the words from the Santana song to myself, "Well, it's a hot one. Seven inches from the midday sun." Wonder if that is a sign of how hot I think it is?

Family vacation: Last Sunday (eight days ago) we got back from a very balanced family vacation at the Oregon Coast with my whole family. Almost everyone made an appearance for at least a few days with the exception of my niece and her family, since they live in Germany, a nephew who just started a new job, and another nephew and his wife, since his heavy metal band was heading out on a tour. (Can't make that stuff up!) I say the vacation was balanced because it was a nice mixture of relaxing, interacting, fun, and just being together. Instead of boring you with lots of words, a photo diary should suffice to show highlights of our trip.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport where a seal that Ian named Lovey just wanted to friends with a little boy, a megalodon shark jaw is a fun place to take photos, and a shark tunnel was the highlight.

The conclusion of the "100 Books Every Child Should Hear Before Kindergarten" project with involvement from Great-Grandma Shirley, Great Aunt Becky and Great Uncle Tony, Auntie Carly and Great Aunt Grace, and Great Aunt Kathy. The 100th book was read to Ian by his great-grandma! (Click this link for details about the project.)

A morning outing to a nearby tide-pool during low tide was one of the week's biggest highlights

Playing at the beach on the Oregon Coast is rarely about sun-bathing. It is all about running from waves, digging holes, building sand castles, long walks, skipping stones, and fun.

The house, where ten of us stayed, was dubbed 'The Cliff House.' On the other side of this totem pole was a cliff of about two stories down to the beach. We had to sneak onto a neighboring property in order to walk the stairs down to the beach. Bingley, our dog, figured out the route and once walked it all by himself. Not good.

My recent reading activity: Where I attempted to read/blog for 24 hours in four days. I nearly finished the time goal, completed three books and made progress on four others. Below are my final results or See details here.

  • The Heart of American Poetry. Print. Currently at 79% (+40% total progress during project).
  • The Grapes of Wrath. Print and Audio. Currently at 52%. (+12%  total progress)
  • Beach Reads. Print. Currently at 100% (Complete, 54% of the book read during readathon).
  • The Girl In His Shadow. Audio. Currently at 100% (Complete, 50% read during blogathon)
  • Lessons in Chemistry. Audio. Currently at 73% (+60% total progress)
  • Maus. Print. Currently at 88%. (+80% total progress)
  • Watercress. Complete!

Serendipity: Yesterday Don and I wanted to take a drive in the sports car to get out in the sun so we drove up to see our daughter and grandchildren. We ended up heading to a little private lake with them for a delightful afternoon together.

The lake water, fed by a mountain stream, was quite cold even though the day was hot, no one wanted to go in very far for very long. I didn't try going in further than my ankles. Jamie played endlessly with his new early birthday present, a sand toy.

Political: Often I hear about all the problems people associate with Biden. The news media rarely reports on all the good stuff he is doing or all he is doing to make the country a better place for people to live. So here are a few highlights from this past week. Next time someone complains about Biden in your presence pull out on these facts to show how much he is really doing:

This week's funniest cartoon. Anyone with a dog will recognize this look:
