Friday Quotes, January 15th

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City ReaderShare the opening quote from the book.
The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's VoiceFind a quote from page 56.

Check out the links for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Participants don't select their favorite, coolest, or most intellectual books, they just use the one they are currently reading. This is the book I'm reading right now:

Book Title: Nice Recovery by Susan Juby
6990527

Book Beginning:
I sometimes imagine my pre-drinking personality as a rich field just waiting for some mind-altering substance to come along so that my alcoholic self could sprout and flourish.
Friday 56:
It took Hank a minute or two to realize what was happening, but once he did, he also grasped that he'd just been dumped in front of a crowd and that was not cool. Not cool at all.
Comment: I read a book by Susan Juby, The Truth Commission, earlier this Fall and really enjoyed it. In the end notes of that book the author mentioned she was in recovery from alcoholism and named the title of the book about her experiences with recovery. In the preface she writes, "Addiction memoirs have an odd reputation, and I find myself a little embarrassed to be writing one." Thought I would check it out and see if there are any little jewels of wisdom I can share with students or friends who are in trouble with alcohol. I'm only a few pages in so I can't really judge it yet as to its usefulness.

  3. Well I like the extracts, something tells me this will be an 'alcohol memoir' worth reading! I shall have to look for The Truth Commission on goodreads and find a synopsis now. 😀

    1. Truth Commission is a YA book about a girl whose sister is using the family for material for her graphic novels. It is about the family dynamics. A unique story line.

    1. I like them, too, for some weird reason. I guess I like to know that people can actually triumph over their demons.

  11. Hi Anne,

I don't tend to read much non-fiction, especially not memoirs, as I think that people's troubles, be it an addiction or any other life-changing issues, should be kept private and not out there for the whole world to see, should they be interested that is.

I'm afraid that my feelings are doubled, if the subject of the book is a 'celebrity', as we are all the same under the skin, so your life or my own, should be feted in the same way.

The cover is pretty apt though, although certainly nothing to be proud of, not what I would choose!

Thanks for sharing. The above comments are purely my own opinion and the world of books would be a dull place if we all liked reading the same thing :)

    Yvonne.

  17. Sounds interesting, and I like the way the author has approached the topic - with humor and head-on. Definitely worth checking out. Thanks for sharing, and for the visit.

  18. I just finished The Truth Commission a couple of days ago, so I saw this and thought, "Wait, I know that author's name..." I'm curious to read this as well! I really liked the book I read, and as I think about it, the three teenaged friends in the book were definitely NOT partiers, and there was a fair amount of concern expressed about an acquaintance who had gotten into drugs.
