Quotes on Friday, Dec. 5

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader
The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice

Check out the links for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Participants don't select their favorite, coolest or most intellectual books, they just use the one they are currently reading.

Book: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Book Beginnings
While I was still in Amsterdam, I dreamed about my mother for the first time in years.
Friday 56
Though I didn't understand why he [Dad] was so unhappy, it was clear to me that his unhappiness was our fault. My mother and I got on his nerves.
Comments: Everyone seems to be talking about this book. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction this year. So far, however, two things are pretty clear---this is not a book about a happy boy/man; and the book weighs a ton!

Progress: page 62 of 771. I just started reading it today.

If you've read the book, I'd love to hear what you thought of it. If not, what do you think about the opening line and the quote from page 56?

  1. Cool cover. Being a Pulitzer Prize winner would make me consider reading it. I would need to check it out further. I hope you are enjoying it.

  4. Wow! That's a long book! I recently finished reading a book that was 450 pages long and although it was a good story, I thought it would never end! I hope this one is worth the time commitment.
Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment.

    1. Ha-ha! I remember reading a book once that was around 1000 pages. As I read it all I did was determine what percentage of the book I had finished.

  5. I like the excerpts and have been thinking about reading this one because of all the positive reviews. However, all the negative reviews and just the sheer weight of it has me a little hesitant!

  7. I am reading it on my tablet and am stuck in the museum and not quite sure what's going on; it's taking forever. The writing is good, but I hope it picks up the pace on the plot soon!!

    1. Yes, I had trouble picturing the setting in the museum. With nearly 800 pages I am thinking the whole plot will unfold slowly. The writing sure is good, though.
