What I'm reading...and want to read

What I’m reading now:

Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness- the third book in the Chaos Walking Trilogy.  I like the series a lot but I'm finding it hard to hit my stride with this book.  I am on pages 350 of 600 and I still have a hard time reading any more than 25 pages per sitting.

What I’m listening to now on audiobooks:

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann---the National Book Award Winner for 2009 and for good reason.  Parts of this book are so well written it is like reading eating chocolate or skinny dipping in champagne. Yum.  And the audiobook is read by a cast of actors, my favorite so far is the voice actor from Ireland.  Love it.

What I recently finished reading:
The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood---a fabulous and frightening dystopian novel written by an absolute writing master.  See my review for more on this book.

What I will be Reading Next:
Chasing Fireflies: a novel of discovery by Charles Martin---I'm in two book clubs and this book is for one of those clubs.  Everyone who has finished it says they like it.  I've got a week.  Better get to it.
What I Wish I Had Time to Read:

The House at Sugar Beach by Helene Cooper---my whole family has read this book and talks about it all the time.  I'm on page 200 of 330 so you'd think I could try to finish it sooner than later, but other reading always gets in the way.

I will be out of town for a few days so I won't have a chance to post this on the usual WWW Wednesday post.  Thought I'd post early since I am stuck without a book to review.

What are you reading right now?  What have you recently completed?  Wish you had time to read?

  1. Oh, so many great books, Anne!

We recently read Let The Great World Spin for one of my book groups - we had some great discussions about it! The audio sounds good.

I still haven't read any Atwood books - this one sounds good. I've read some excellent reviews of it.

The House at Sugar Beach was excellent - I learned so much from it! What an amazing life story. In fact, I just recommended it to someone else today. Here's my review:

Enjoy all those good books this week!

  2. I really want to read that Atwood book, but I'm struggling along in our BC read. Some of the vignettes are compelling; however, I'm not enjoying the book as much as you are. I'm not a fan of short stories and it has that feel to it. I'm hoping for a good discussion next Wed. :)

  3. I keep posting and talking about Monsters of Men! I really think Patrick Ness is one of the most brilliant authors I've read in a long time. I hope that you find yourself enjoying it more as you get further along!

  6. Thanks for dropping by everyone. I am currently on the computer in the waiting room at the hospital. My dad had open heart surgery yesterday. He is doing well. I did get a chance to read while we were waiting yesterday so I think I finally got over the hump on Monsters of Men. I also know what you mean, margaret about Let the Great World Spin. Some of the stories I like others I can hardly wait until they are done. When I focus on the writing I am fine, when I focus on the story I find myself getting impatient. I think that The Handmaid's Tale is such a good story and so thought-provoking. If you like that you will like The Year of the Flood.

  7. Hi Anne,
Hope your father keeps doing well and can leave the hospital soon.
I'm currently reading Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada and my wish I had time to read books include the new biography of Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, by Eric Metaxas. I don't know why I've been on a WWII kick lately. Maybe because of The Book Thief?

  8. I've never read anything by Bonhoeffer but this book sounds like something I would really enjoy. Thanks for the tip. I adore The Book Thief. It really is a MUST read book.
