TTT: Books I Wish I Owned

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Wish I Owned

I don't buy as many books as one would think based on how much I read because I am a devoted library-user. However, every once in a while I wish I had my own copy of book to refer back to, reread, or to look good in a set on my book shelf.

1. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien---I used to have the whole Lord of the Rings series. Not sure what happened to it but I often wish I could reread my old copy of The Hobbit.

2. Poetry books by Mary Oliver---I own several of her small poetry books and one large one, Devotions, but there are many others I've read and don't own or haven't read at all. I'd like to start with her American Primitive, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, and New and Selected Poems which won the National Book Award in 1992.

3. The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai---I adore this book and would love to own my own copy.

4. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens---See note above.

5. Uncommon Type: Some Short Stories by Tom Hanks---I haven't actually read this book but I want a copy of it to take on an upcoming long trip. I   like taking lightweight paperbacks with me when I travel so I shed it when I am finished reading it. Has anyone read it? Are the stories good?

6. What to Read and Why by Francine Prose---I love reading books about books. And I often mark them up so I need my own copy.

7. Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver---I own all of Kingsolver's fiction except this one. I've read it and want to include it in my collection.

8.  Hmm. Can't think of anything else right now.

  1. Ooh The Hobbit. I should have had that on my list too- that's a must own!

  2. I try to use library books most of the time. Sometimes, though, I get it into my mind to read a book, as I did last week with The Goldfinch. I tried several libraries and then bookstores and no one had it. Then I remembered that everyone is probably buying the book before the movie comes out. So I ordered it from Amazon.

  3. I'd never even heard of Unsheltered before, and I thought I'd read all of Kingsolver's books. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. I have a copy of The Hobbit, but I'm not fond of the cover. I'd like a more striking cover some day if my copy ever wears out. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  5. Libraries are great. Even though there are a lot of books I want to own (and I just can't seem to pass up a book I'm interested in reading when it goes on sale for $1.99), libraries are great places to get books that you're pretty sure you don't have to own and can't find on sale. I didn't know Tom Hanks had a book out. He's pretty talented.

  6. I love my library (in fact, I have cards for both my city and my county library), but I also buy a lot of books. I shouldn't because I really don't have the room, plus they end up just sitting in a stack gathering dust. And yet, still I buy ... it's an addiction!

    Happy TTT!

  7. Maybe one day you will find the same edition of The Hobbit. Definitely see the allure of nostalgia.

  8. The Hobbit definitely needs a place in your collection! I love that book!

  9. Oh yes, books featuring other books to read -- an awesome resource for infinite suggestions (which is great and super necessary for me, as a person who definitely doesn't find 5 new books to read every time she enters a building in which books are contained). On a serious note, yes, highlighting and/or adding your own notes to those books is great. What kind of things do you mark?

  10. Good list. I do buy books even though I know I should use the local library more. But I convince myself it's okay because then I support our local indie bookstore and our local schools since I donate once I've read.
