Follow Friday...Veterans Day Edition

Alison Can Read and Parajunkee

(Congratulations to Book Nympho and Mother Lode on being the featured bloggers of the day for Follow Friday.)

Q: In light of 11.11.11 and Veteran’s Day tell us about your favorite soldier and how he or she is saving the world. Fictional or real life.

A:  Donald Bennett, my husband!

Colonel Don Bennett, State Judge Advocate for the Washington Army National Guard.
Served in Iraq from 2004-05.
33+ years of service to our country.
He is my hero!
Don is devoted to our country and to justice, not only for our soldiers but also for the citizens of countries where our military serves. As a JAG officer he is in the position of advising commanders and making sure that standards are upheld and laws governing conduct are enforced.

Runner-up: First Lieutenant Gordon Parr, my uncle

Served in the Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater.
His unit, the 96th Infantry Division (belatedly in 2007) received its Presidential Unit Citation for its "esprit, heroism, and continuing demonstrations of raw courage" in the decisive Battle of Okinawa.
Gordon died this year at age 87.
He -- and a whole generation of men and women -- fought for our freedom against incredible odds. We are here today because of their courage and valor. Thank you for your service.

A great big word of thanks to all soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen, and coast guardsmen who have answered the call of duty to our country. I appreciate your service and recognize that freedom isn't free. Thank you! Also, thank you to all military families who have sacrificed so much for us.

  1. What a handsome hero we have here in our house huh? I am proud of you for how well you got through the year Dad was in Iraq. I am also so proud to be a part of this strong family. Happy Veterans Day.

  2. I wish I had the pictures of my grandfathers when they were in uniform. They sure are handsome men (your husband and uncle). Thanks for following me and I have returned the favor, have a great weekend and Happy Veterans Day!

  4. Hi, old follower here for the hop.

My husband is also in the military (USAF) and had a tour to Iraq 2009 to 2010.

  5. We are so blessed to have such great heros in our family.

  6. Thankful for your husband and uncle for everything they've done for us. Happy Veteran's Day!! I'm also a new follower and wanted to thank you for following us at http://kcs-books.blogspot.com. Have a great weekend!!

  7. Some people have friends and/or family who served or who is serving in the military. Other people aren’t really keen on the long-standing war and really have no answer at all.

As for me? I don’t know anyone who is serving or who has served so I decided to go with what I want and chose a fictional soldier as an answer. The thing is, I had four prime candidates! I did eventually end up with one with a lengthy explanation. Care to know who it is? Follow me back to http://www.howardsherman.net and find out!

In celebration of today’s cool date of 11/11/11 I’m offering a special $11 discount off all my interactive fiction books! Sure I’m a book blogger but I’m also an author. All the details of the $11 off on 11/11/11 is at the bottom of my Follow Friday blog post.

Since I’m posting this kind of late just add 'FF’ to the coupon code and it’ll be valid all weekend long!

    Thank God it’s Follow Friday!

  13. Oh wow, look at that , Great personal story.

    Happy Friday!!

  14. Thanks goes out to you and your husband. He's devoted his life to the service of our country, and you served right alongside him.

I really enjoyed reading your post. My family is full of military members. I understand the sacrifices you must have made daily while your husband was gone. We lived on Okinawa for four years and the people there (Okinawans) still see it as a horrible battle because they were basically a sacrifice from the Japanese on the mainland. They never like to be referred to as Japanese people there.
Thanks to your uncle and husband again!
