My olde...Not much cheering up - just commiserating! My older son is an avid reader but our younger son (17) claims to hate reading now. And he has an English teacher this year who told her students she doesn't like to read! Why is she an English teacher??? We have also seen the reduction in full books read in English classes - it the Common Core Curriculum to blame for that - it emphasizes shorter pieces, excerpts, and nonfiction - fewer novels. Thanksfully, my son will still need to read a few excellent novels for his World Lit class this year - The Kite Runner, The Namesake, and Persepolis, among others. If it weren't for required reading, he wouldn't read at all!

As for your library, I bet some of the downturn is definitely due to the iPads. Maybe more kids are reading e-books.

Sue

Book By BookSue Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14532098225905355332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4083328248557950617.post-89276309805520422542015-10-19T07:40:16.040-07:002015-10-19T07:40:16.040-07:00It is disheartening. I have come to believe that by the time they get to high school, they are readers, or they aren't. I think it's too late to create a reader. I know that's pretty pessimistic... My circ is holding it's own this year. I think the reason is that the middle school started a "Million Page Challenge" last year and some kids got into reading more. I have a lot of Freshmen coming in before school to check out books. I have no answer...just thoughts. Good luck.Annette Millshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13850197520930988077noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4083328248557950617.post-34183245939903272392015-10-18T17:59:03.664-07:002015-10-18T17:59:03.664-07:00I'm so sad about this, Anne. I wish I could think of some answers for you. :( Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17197599882756386184noreply@blogger.com
