Day 1 Question:
Borders Books (USA and Canada) is going out of business.  How will this affect you and where will you/do you shop for books most often?

My Answer: Borders is the only bookstore in my town other than a few used book stores, none of which are very good. I am completely bummed that Borders is going-out-of-business. I have decided that I will be more deliberate about supporting the Independent Book Stores in my area and in Seattle (University Bookstore in Tacoma and Elliott Bay Books in Seattle) and I resolve to purchase books from them so that they won't go out of business and I will still have some options of a place to go to browse for books. I still get the majority of my books from the public library and I admit to purchasing quite a few books from Amazon.com.

Now it is your turn. Remember your comment enters you in the drawing for a prize.

Day Two Question here.  You can enter every day!

  1. I have never been to a Borders store, so it doesn't really affect me at all. I shop for books mostly at Chapters, there are 2 big stores in town, one at either end of the city. But I am trying not to buy books until I can get through the massive pile I already have.

  2. I spend a lot of time at the library, 'cause hey, free books. Other than that, I buy them at used bookstores or on Amazon, so this really won't have too much of an impact on my book-buyin'. I mean, I'm vaguely sad it's closing, because it's just sad when bookstores close in general, but eh.

  3. Happy Blogoversary!!! 2 years of blogging is just an achievement :)

I don't have Borders in my place so it won't affect me much, we have National Bookstore in my place so I think ill buy there more often or in case some books aren't available I would go to Amazon :)

  4. As exemplified in these comments, I think that Borders is closing partially because of its lack of necessity in our society. It's not that we're not buying books, it's that our way of shopping has dramatically changed. We have major super chain stores where we can find our groceries, clothes, electronics, and books. Or we shop online for convenience's sake.

I typically only buy books for other people, and when I do buy, I'm a Barnes & Noble girl (largely because of their support of NJ Summer Reading and public libraries), so the closing of Borders bookstores doesn't affect me immediately/directly/personally. However, I'm heartbroken for the jobs lost as a result.

Overall, the dramatic changes in how we shop is something of which to take note. And the attention drawn to the closing of a major bookstore chain shouldn't be an indicator that reading and/or books aren't important, just that we might be getting them elsewhere.

  5. Happy Blogoversary! :)

The Borders at my local mall has long been my favorite book store... though I do purchase a lot of hardcovers from Amazon.com, it's my number one stop for paperbacks. I guess I'll be shopping at Barnes & Noble from now on, as there aren't any indie book stores in my area.

  6. It won't bother me at all. I live in Germany and buy all my books on Amazon anyway. Also, I just recently discovered the greatness that is #TheBookDepository
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. The closing of Borders won't affect me at all. I have browsed through the store many times, but I hate to buy books at full price. I usually buy books at Target, Costco, and Amazon. I also use PaperBackSwap to "recycle" books.

  8. I didn't usually shop for books at Border's so I am not really affected by their closure. I buy books at Chaucer's, our awesome local indie book shop

  9. Happy Blogoversary!

I don't usually shop for books at bookstores, but rather use the libraries around me heavily. I do feel extermely sad for people whose only source for books were Borders and for those who lost their jobs too. I think people should have the experience of walking and browsing through bookstores. I can't imagine my life without being surrounded by books!

  10. I used to love Borders when I lived somewhere with that store nearby. Now I live in a different state and have no Borders within driving distance. I feel the pain of the folks who have this as their primary story, but I mainly shop online, Amazon or B & N, for paperbacks and at B & N for my Nookbooks.

  11. I live in a rural area so there are not any bookstores within 45 minutes of me besides the library. I would go to Borders when we go into the city or the mall. I loved shopping at Borders but their prices are so much higher than other sources like Target, Walmart or Amazon that I stopped shopping there.

  12. Happy Anniversary, Anne!
As to Borders, its closing doesn't directly affect me. I shop at Village Books and all the amazing used book stores in Bellingham, as well as at Betterworldbooks.com and half.com and - occasionally - amazon.com. And I do my fair share of no-obligation-to-return trading with friends, colleagues, and students too!
Borders always felt sterile to me, and I've visited quite a few. Although, as many, I mourn the loss of any IRL bookstore, Borders as a chain I will not miss.

  13. As you know, Anne, I just wrote a post about this on my blog last week:

    http://bookbybook.blogspot.com/2011/07/demise-of-bookstores.html

I am greatly saddened by Borders' closing. Although I can't afford to buy most of my books (love the library!), I do buy lots of books as gifts. We had a tiny independent bookstore in our town that closed a few years ago, so I do shop at Borders quite a bit. Our family likes to gift each other with Borders gift cards! I have always preferred Borders to B&N, maybe because their prices were better and they had a free frequent-buyer program that I've participated in for many years. I will definitely miss Borders.

I read somewhere that it's not the switch to online shopping (amazon) or e-books that did Borders in, but the trend of buying books in discount stores like Costco, Wal-Mart, and Target. The problem is that the discount chains only carry the most popular new books - really, a very small selection compared to what you find in Borders or even in a small independent. I think that just can't compare to the pleasure of browsing through a real bookstore.

I will miss it very much and need to make one last trip to Borders this week to spend my one remaining gift card (sniff)...so sad!

  14. This is a very interesting question for me as I am an employee of Barnes and Noble, Borders' largest competitor. While it makes me really sad to hear of any bookstore closing, at my store it has really helped business. We have some Borders customers who come in really defensive and ready to complain, and we have others who are very disappointed, but need their books so are learning to love us too.

  15. Happy blogoversary!
I am sad to see Borders go. I've always preferred B&N but it's always a shame to see a bookstore die. And I think it will be bad for the publishing industry.

  16. I am very sad about Borders closing. It was my favorite book store. With them gone, I'll probably be ordering more books online via Book Depository and/or Amazon. Heck, I might even find better use of my Kindle now!

  17. It breaks my heart about Borders. It was the first bookstore that I ever got attached to besides a couple of local indies. When my friend worked there I got to see their business practices in regards to how they treated their employees. It was no different than how they treated their customers, great! I'll probably adjust to another seller, but I've yet to figure out who. I don't take my book business just anywhere, it's more than just buying books to me. :)

  18. there was/is a borders near my parent's house (out of state) that we do/would frequent anytime we were there. i'm sad to see it close!

it won't be too much of a problem for me since most of my books now come from netGalley! :)

  19. I’m in mourning because of Borders going out of business. I love Borders and mine passed the first cut of stores closing. But not now, obviously. I’ll be forced to buy books from Barnes & Noble, which I don't like very much, if I want to go to an actual bookstore. I guess I’ll just have to buy my books at Amazon.

  20. Happy Blogiversary and thanks for the invite to check out your giveaway!

I'm pretty sad about Borders closing. One of my friends was a manager at my local store so he (and some of the other employees I've gotten to know over the years) are out of jobs which is really tough. I also really liked their store as a space to meet with friends, hang out over coffee, and of course shop for books. I told one of my favorite clerks there that they needed to keep tissue by the register because I was getting choked up as I was checking out.

  21. Its really not going to affect me, but I am very saddened to see it being closed down. I remember being a child and going to the mall and having my mom take me there to get books for school. Very sad day for the book world :(

  22. Anytime a bookstore goes out of business, I am sad. Luckily, we have two big B&N stores within thirty minutes of our house. But I will miss the big Borders store very much.

Thank you for offering this lovely giveaway!

  23. Happy anniversary and thanks for the giveaway!!

I don't have a Borders by my house, and I don't order from them online. I'm not affected very much. I use B&N because I have a membership there. I'm very sad for those who will be hurt by their closing.

  25. My Borders closed with the first round of closures, so I'm used to it by now. I mostly order books online, or buy them at Barnes and Noble. It's the only bookstore close to me anymore. And happy Blogoversary!

  26. I've never been to a Borders, actually. We had a Waldenbooks in our mall though, and it closed a few years back when Borders first started having trouble. I was sad to see it go, especially with how vicious people were during the liquidation sales!

I do most of my shopping at our local B&N, which I love. I know a lot of people complain about their customer service, but the employees at ours are so incredibly friendly! We do have a few used book stores in town, but I've had bad experiences with them, so I rarely visit those. Other than that, I get most of m books at our library's used book sales that they have twice a year!

  27. I used to go to Borders usually once a month and I love their member's rewards. The store is about a 15 mintue ride from my house. I have a 'Books.A.Million' that it's much closer. I usually buy books from Amazon and I go to my local library a lot.
I am sad to see them go though.
